NORWALK, IOWA, August 17, 2023 —The Norwalk City Council approved a development agreement with Husmann Construction, LLC for the second hotel project to take place in Norwalk, a Tru by Hilton Hotel. The first hotel project was recently approved just two months earlier by City Council for a Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott. A four-story Tru by Hilton Midscale hotel will be built in the new Norwalk Central development and help to serve the needs of thousands of new travelers and visitors to the Gregg Young Sports Campus at Norwalk Central, which includes the newly opened turf multi-sport Fareway Fields.
Ryan Husmann of Husmann Construction stated “We are very excited about bringing the Tru by Hilton brand to Norwalk Central and introducing travelers and sports teams to a fun and innovative lodging experience. We believe the Tru brand has everything upcoming travelers are looking for. The public spaces are creative, fun, and designed to provide active areas for people to play games, lounge, eat, and work. Our 24/7 “Eat. & Sip.” market will offer drinks and snacks, as well as some local specialties like the new Norwalk Super Gold Ale, and local celebrity Jason Mamoa’s Mananalu Water. Some of our amenities will include a unique local wall mural, indoor pool, outdoor patio, electric charging stations, fitness rooms, games, adjoining/connecting rooms, mobile check-in, Digital Key, highspeed WiFi, remote printing, a social media wall, and laundry services.
The Tru brand offers everything traveling athletes coming to Norwalk Central might want. Tru offers bottle-fill drinking fountains and fitness centers that utilize the latest fitness developments including barre, TRX bands, cardio, free weights, and flexibility equipment. We are thrilled to be introducing these game-changers by Hilton to the Des Moines metro and help out-of-town travelers learn what Norwalk is all about.”
The City spent more than five years planning the 70+ acre mixed-use development in the heart of Norwalk in partnership with Diligent Development, SportsPlex USA, and Heartland Sports. Once completed in the summer of 2024, the development will draw visitors from all over the Midwest for the high-tech turf sports campus, and the various new shopping, dining, recreation, and entertainment opportunities.
The Tru by Hilton Hotel will be located on the north side of the new Chatham Street extension, which is the main corridor through Norwalk Central, immediately east of the new Fareway Grocery Store which is currently under construction on the corner of HWY 28 and Chatham. The developer is purchasing a 3.5-acre site that will include the hotel parcel and a commercial outlot for future retail and dining uses. Just south of the hotel site is the Gregg Young Sports Campus including the City’s public recreation center (City State Bank Norwalk Fieldhouse), city park and trail, a new Starbucks, and several other retail and dining projects underway.
“We have worked with the Husmann family over the last few years in their dedicated effort to bring a highquality hotel and new retail opportunities to Norwalk. This community is well overdue for hotel accommodations and will now get to enjoy the benefits of having brands like Hilton and Marriott in Norwalk. The City, many individuals, entities, and businesses have worked so hard for the last several years to plan and develop Norwalk in a way that will sustain positive growth and provide opportunities for years to come. It’s very fulfilling to see this hard work produce such valuable results.” City Economic Development Director, Hollie Zajicek.
Mayor Tom Phillips commented, “Norwalk continues to attract high-quality businesses, and we feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with such great development groups in our city. The Husmann family and Husmann Construction have been a joy to work with and we welcome them to our beautiful community. The Tru by Hilton will be a fantastic addition to Norwalk Central and complement the many other amenities being built over the next few years.”
