Spring 2021 New Businesses and Projects Update

Spring 2021 New Businesses and Projects Update
Posted on 03/19/2021

We have had some requests for updates on new businesses and development projects in Norwalk. We are bouncing back in a very healthy manner from the unfortunate virus that hurt so many businesses and economies over the last year. Below is a summary list of current and upcoming projects as well as new business activity. Please feel free to reach out to the City with questions, concerns, and factual information.

Hy-Vee: No change- Delayed due to other projects in priority queue, start date not specified at this time.

New Chain Restaurants: We have been in discussions with several franchise owners over the last year and feel positive that at least one new restaurant will locate in Norwalk within the next 12-24 months.

Mahalo’s Coffee & Donuts: Recently opened (including dine-in) and is doing a fantastic job!

Sports Campus: We’re in advanced stage planning with a private developer for a large indoor/outdoor sports and recreation compound which may include expanded public amenities and additional programming space for the Park and Recreation Department. Pending final negotiation and Council approval, the project could begin site work by Fall of 2021.

Norwalk Central!: The City has been working on this 100+ acre development for many years now. Several news outlets released stories about the project based on recent City Council discussions and plan presentations. Once fully developed, the area will host public amenities such as outdoor recreation spaces, trails, parks, entertainment and venue areas, shopping and dining districts, and the potential sports campus project which will have both public and private components including several large sports fields. We hope to have the infrastructure plan and first development agreement approved this spring which would allow Norwalk Central to start road construction this summer or fall.

Sleep Inn Hotel: Still planned to construct in Norwalk in the future, however due to the economic impact of business and travel restrictions, the national hotel industry has been significantly set back. This brand will look at our area again within the next year.

Cobblestone Hotel & Chop House Steakhouse Restaurant: We are in final negotiations with the hotel and restaurant developers. Pending Council approvals, the hotel could start site work this summer. This is the catalyst for the entire development of the North Shore area and entrance to our community!

Alice Place Senior Apartments: Construction continues (next to Arby’s) and they plan to be open for occupancy in late spring or early summer, 2021. https://aliceplacenorwalk.com/

Holland Farms Senior Living: Construction is near completion and the opening date should be announced soon! https://www.hollandfarmsliving.com/youre-invited-learn-more-about-holland-farms-at-lunch-on-march-23-and-25/

Kosovo restaurant: The Kosovar business investors are currently looking at several opportunities in Norwalk and we hope to announce new developments by early 2022.

Some of the businesses that are expanding or recently opened: Michael Foods (expanding and hiring more FT positions), Mahalo's Coffee & Mini-Donuts, Amore Pet Boutique, Johnson Orthodontics (soon to build second facility), El Dorado Grill, Jimmy Johns, Rock Valley Physical Therapy, Radiant Complexions and more.

New commercial spaces: We have one available commercial space left in each of the three newer retail buildings; Johnson Orthodontics, Sunset Crest, and Hughes Century Crossing. The facilities filled up quickly and is a great sign of a healthy, growing commercial base in Norwalk. The industrial and manufacturing sectors are still showing a lot of interest and we continue to submit proposals to interested companies. Commercial recruitments will remain strong.

New Public Amenities: Timberview Park, Warrior Run Park, E. Holland Park improvements, Great Western Trail Connection, another annual Norwalk City tax levy reduction, North Ave/Main intersection improvements, Hwy 28/Colonial pedestrian crossing, and coming spring 2021- Great Western Trail connection, North Ave overlay, and coming soon, an exciting announcement of a large park expansion.

Keep supporting Norwalk businesses!

Thank you
