Norwalk, IA (Sept. 17, 2021) – The City of Norwalk has approved a plan for a new recreation and athletic facility. The City Council held a public hearing at their regularly scheduled meeting on September 16th to approve a General Obligation Urban Renewal Loan Agreement. Norwalk will spend a maximum of $9.5 million to construct the public facility, parking, and purchase of the land. The City engaged Denovo Construction Services in June 2021 to begin early phases of design concepts for the facility.

The new project will entail constructing a 45,000 square foot multi-use facility for public athletics, sports, and recreation. The facility will contain four indoor basketball/multi-sport courts, restrooms, equipment storage, Park and Recreation offices and a common area for reception, concessions, and multi-purpose activity space.

“This recreation facility is just one component of a much larger and very exciting project called Norwalk Central,” Hollie Zajicek, Economic Development Director. “The anchor to Norwalk Central will be the 22 plus acre sports and recreation campus, with the City’s athletic facility complimenting the bigger project.”

The project is contingent upon several development agreements being approved by the City Council between the City and landowners. The other agreement is with a private developer for the adjoining parts of the sports and recreation campus.

“Norwalk Central will be the heart of the community and provide over 60 acres of shopping, dining, recreation, entertainment, parks, trails and walkable residential communities.”

The site is located on the east side of Highway 28, between Cherry Parkway and the future eastbound Chatham Avenue extension. The project is expected to break ground in the spring of 2022, with hopes to be completed by the fall of 2024.
