Main Street Reconstruction

Main Street Reconstruction
Posted on 02/21/2020

This construction season the City of Norwalk is contracting out the reconstruction of the North Avenue and Main Street Intersection.

The main reason for the project is to improve safety in the area. It will also focus on improving the pedestrian experience rather than trying to engineer solutions to get vehicles through the area quicker. We will install “bump outs” at the four corners. These bump outs will improve pedestrian safety while crossing the streets and improve ADA compliance.

The bump outs will also force drivers to slow down as it makes you uncomfortable to speed. This reconstruction will make it difficult for larger vehicles and vehicles with trailers to make the turning movements. Some adjustments to drivers’ routines may be necessary.

There will be colored concrete in the street at the crosswalks and pavers are being installed in the sidewalk area. Landscape beds will also be going in. The streetscape elements can and will be expanded along North and Main with future streetscape project opportunities. Parking will be adjusted, but no spots in the area will be lost.

We understand this is a unique intersection for Norwalk and the Cities history. We want to make these improvements to make the area nicer.

Major benefits of the project include:

  • Increasing pedestrian visibility for drivers and pedestrians (important near a daycare & school)
  • Protect vehicles in on-street parking
  • Shorten pedestrian crossing times
  • Better-delineated parking areas for delivery
  • Repair structurally deficient concrete
  • Beautify Norwalk's historic main street
  • Increase area for patio furniture & planting
  • Brings the intersection into ADA compliance

Attached is a rendering of the planned improvements. The City is continuing the efforts started by local businesses to beautify and improve the community. We are very excited about this project and the future of this area! Please let us know if you have any questions.
